What to see and do in Fresno del Río

Fresno del Río
Village
Fresno del Río is a village in the Guardo comarca, within the Montaña Palentina, in the partido judicial of Saldaña, 84 kilometres north of the capital, in the transition between the Castilian meseta and the mountains; it is bathed by three rivers, among them the río Carrión, which thirty years ago yielded trout and today has barely any left. It has around 170 inhabitants, a figure that triples in summer. Probably settled by the Vaccei, in the 15th century it became part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Saldaña, and between the 16th and 19th centuries its lords were the dukes of the Infantado. It lives from irrigated and dryland farming. Its church of San Juan Bautista, with a single nave, barrel vaults and a dome on pendentives, holds a 17th-century main altarpiece with sculptures of San Antonio de Padua and a Crucifijo.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Fresno del Río
Monument
The parish church of Fresno del Río, in the comarca of the Montaña Palentina, beside the river Carrión, where the Castilian plateau ends. Built of rubblework and ashlar, it has a single nave covered by a barrel vault with lunettes and a shallow dome on pendentives over the transept, with a round-arched portal on the Epistle side preceded by a porch. The presbytery preserves an altarpiece from the early 17th century, with carvings of San Antonio de Padua and a crucifix of the same period.
Trout of the Carrión River
Food and drink
Trout fishing in the Carrión sustained for generations much of the population of this village lying at 1,020 metres above sea level, and trout remains one of the identity dishes of its kitchens.
