Villalba de Guardo
Village
Villalba de Guardo is a village in the comarca of Vega-Valdavia, in the province of Palencia, with about 195 inhabitants at 1,133 metres, situated at the foot of a slope and on the banks of the river Carrión, which rises nearby at the Fuentes Carrionas. The WHO's 2019 world air quality report ranked it as the locality with the cleanest air in Europe. In the past the village used to flood when the river rose, for which a stone ashlar barbican more than 400 paces long was built; its lands yielded rye, flax and hay, and it had charcoal kilns, a fulling mill and several flour mills that neighbouring villages resorted to in times of drought.
