Village
Guardo is a town in the province of Palencia, comarcal capital of Alto Carrión, located at the western end of the province, next to the border with León, between the foothills of the Cantabrian mountains and the Castilian-Leonese plateau; it has around 5,500 inhabitants and is crossed by the río Carrión, the ancient Roman Nubis. The Camino Olvidado to Santiago passes through the municipality. Guardo grew with anthracite mining and the coal railway from La Robla to Bilbao, and preserves the Gothic church of San Juan Bautista, the palace of Archbishop Bullón and a 1975 monument to the miner. On its mountains extends one of the finest centuries-old oak forests of Spain and southern Europe, according to naturalist Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, today threatened by open-pit coal mining.
Monument
A sixteenth-century flamboyant Gothic church built over a thirteenth-century Romanesque building. Its tower was built between 1760 and 1761 and the interior preserves a Christ of the Agony presiding over the altar and eighteenth-century Baroque pieces.
Curiosity
Inside the Gothic church a Romanesque baptismal font is preserved that is supposed to have been inherited from the earlier building or from the hermitage that stood inside the vanished castle of Guardo, today without visible remains.
Monument
Known in the town as La Casa Grande, this eighteenth-century Baroque palace is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and was refurbished in 2022, with its ashlar façade restored. It is the most notable civil building in Guardo and preserves the memory of a lineage that gave the Church one of the best-known prelates of the Palencia mountains.
Monument
A hermitage on the outskirts of the urban centre, surrounded by the oak wood of Corcos, it maintains one of the most deeply rooted devotions of Guardo and is the usual goal of the residents' pilgrimage in the spring months.
Nature
A mass of native oak that envelops the hermitage of the Christ and ranks among the finest centuries-old oak woods of the Montaña Palentina, with hollies, holm oaks and junipers interspersed among the oldest trees.
Nature
A monumental oak that has become a symbol of the municipal district of Guardo, reached by a path that crosses a beech wood dotted with centuries-old oaks in the surroundings of the old monastery of Entrepeñas.
Monument
A five-arched ashlar bridge that crosses the river Carrión as it passes through the urban centre of Guardo and links the two banks beside the Fuentes Carrionas park and the well-known Paseo del Reloj.
Monument
Parish church built in 1961 to serve the neighbourhood that grew up with the mining expansion of Guardo (Palencia), dedicated to Santa Bárbara, patroness of miners, whose feast day continues to be celebrated in the town every 4 December. Its construction at the height of the coal boom reflects the growth the municipality experienced in those years.
Historical milestone
The Explosivos Río Tinto factory operated in Guardo between 1942 and 2008 and turned the town into a chemical as well as a mining centre; its closure marked the end of the industrial cycle that had sustained the town.
Historical milestone
Around 1895 the Sociedad Euskaro-Castellana began extracting anthracite in the surroundings of Guardo and from 1908 the Sociedad Minera San Luis took over; this was the real start of the Palencia coalfield.
Historical milestone
The narrow-gauge line from La Robla to Bilbao, opened in 1894 to carry the coal towards the Biscayan blast furnaces, triggered the development of the coalfield and made Guardo its head town.
Historical milestone
Guardo is mentioned in the tenth century as Buardo or Boardo, linked to the monastery of San Román de Entrepeñas; its castle watched over the border between León and Castile and the passage through the Carrión valley.
Activity
Guardo closes the ninth stage of the Camino Olvidado, the pilgrimage route to Santiago between Bilbao and Ponferrada used between the ninth and twelfth centuries to avoid the unsafe plateau; the stretch from Cervera de Pisuerga adds up to 38 kilometres.
Activity
On the third weekend of August Guardo holds a fair dedicated to the Camino Olvidado, a Way of St James route that between the 9th and 13th centuries helped pilgrims avoid the Muslim aceifa raids harassing the southern routes; as the Reconquista advanced it lost pilgrims to the Camino Francés until it fell into oblivion. Today it is signposted and prepared for walking, cycling or riding, through a landscape crossed by hardly any walkers. The Guardo fair, comarca capital of the Alto Carrión, champions this Jacobean mountain route together with the mining memory of a comarca lying at the western edge of Palencia, between the foothills of the Cantabrian mountain range and the Castilian-León plateau.
Curiosity
On 4 December Guardo celebrates Santa Bárbara, patron saint of miners: despite the closure of the pits, the date remains the most notable day of the calendar for the families of the anthracite coalfield.
Activity
The Semana Santa of Guardo is performed with a staging of the Passion of Christ in which more than a hundred residents take part, and which has become the most massively attended cultural event of the town.
Food and drink
Every October Guardo hosts a competition of railway stews that brings together more than a hundred cooks from the region and revives the spoon dishes that were prepared around the La Robla coal train and fed its gangs, a contest that has rescued almost lost recipes of working-class cooking.
Food and drink
Cattle raised on the high pastures are covered by the Carne de Cervera y Montaña Palentina label and are the basis of the roasts and stews of the villages of the coalfield, alongside game, mushrooms and trout.
Food and drink
The Castilian soup of Palencia has two quite distinct versions: the sopas de rastrojo or toasted soups and the sopa albada, a gratinated garlic soup; both are made with round loaf bread and are served in the houses of the mountains.
Activity
A 12-kilometre circular trail waymarked by the mountaineering federation of Castile and León that sets out from Muñeca and runs through the oak woods and crags around Guardo, punctuated by wooden sculptures.
Activity
A 10-kilometre route that leaves from San Pedro de Cansoles and reaches the Cueva del Erro; it is one of the six family trails of Guardo laid out on local legends written by authors from the comarca.
Curiosity
A 14-kilometre trail named after Arduina, the old bear woman of the oral tradition of the mountains; the wooden sculptures spread along the route give body to the characters of the tale.
Activity
A 7-kilometre route that starts in the outlying village of Intorcisa and passes by the cave of Tía Corita, another of the family routes that Guardo has waymarked drawing on the legends of its villages.
Nature
A natural viewpoint reached by the waymarked 13-kilometre wolves' trail, after passing the Fuente de la Salud; from its ledge one looks out over the Carrión valley and the foothills of the Sierra del Brezo.
Nature
The trails of the municipal district of Guardo cross Peña Mayor, the Alto de la Orca, Peñica Blanca, Corcos and Campos de la Peña, a mosaic of oak, holly, holm oak and juniper on the southern edge of the mountains.
Curiosity
A short 5-kilometre trail runs through the so-called Valle de las Brujas, a place name that gathers up the tradition of witches' covens in the upper Carrión and that gives its name to one of the literary routes waymarked in the municipality.
Nature
The oak woods of the municipal district, praised in their day by Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, form part of the habitat of the Cantabrian capercaillie and the brown bear, two threatened species whose presence is monitored in the Montaña Palentina.
Nature
The river Carrión crosses the urban centre of Guardo and structures the Fuentes Carrionas park and the Paseo del Reloj, an urban green corridor that follows the riverbank and links the two banks beside the stone bridge.
Curiosity
A mural painted in 2022 by the artist David Esteban on a façade in Guardo was chosen best mural in the world by the Street Art Cities platform, as part of the urban art programme that enlivens the town.
Monument
Of the fortress that controlled the passage of the Carrión between the kingdoms of León and Castile nothing remains standing today; only the Romanesque baptismal font of the parish church is connected with the hermitage that its enclosure housed.
Activity
On 13 June Guardo celebrates San Antonio de Padua, its patron saint, whose image is venerated inside the church of San Juan Bautista; it is the town's main festival week and fills the streets of the old quarter.
Activity
On 16 July the residents of Guardo go up on pilgrimage to honour Our Lady of Carmen, one of the events that divide up the town's summer between the June patron saint festivities and the August pilgrimage fair.
Curiosity
The municipality includes three small rural settlements —Muñeca, Intorcisa and San Pedro de Cansoles—, the last of these linked to the pilgrimage route through the mountains; two of them were annexed to Guardo in the nineteen fifties.
Monument
A four-metre bronze erected in 1975 by the sculptor Jacinto Higueras Cátedra, with scenes of work down the pit; it is the most emblematic piece of a town that lived off coal for more than a century. The group, commissioned by the town council in the early 1970s from the architect Antonio Espinosa, was cast at Ángel Lorca's workshops from a 1974 sketch, and is completed by a pond and stone reliefs with mining scenes designed by Higueras Cátedra himself. It was inaugurated on 14 July 1975 at a ceremony presided over by the Minister of Labour, Fernando Suárez González. Every 4 December it hosts the feast of Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners, with a mass and procession that ends before the monument with a floral offering and the singing of "Santa Bárbara bendita".
Nature
A stand of centuries-old oaks considered one of the best preserved in Spain, extending between 1,100 and 1,800 metres of the municipal district and threatened for decades by the advance of open-cast mining.
Activity
Guardo is a stage on the Camino Olvidado, the 444-kilometre pilgrim route between Bilbao and Cacabelos that pilgrims of the ninth to thirteenth centuries preferred because it kept them out of reach of raids from the south, and which today is walked waymarked.
Historical milestone
Between 1942 and 2008 a large chemical plant of Unión Explosivos Río Tinto operated at Guardo which, along with anthracite and the coal railway from La Robla to Bilbao, made the town the largest industrial centre of the Palencia mountains.
Activity
The weekly market that takes over the streets of Guardo every Friday is the largest in the province of Palencia and still works as a comarca meeting point for the scattered villages of the mountains.
Curiosity
A circular ice pit dug by hand and lined with stone, where snow was piled up alternating with layers of straw to supply ice to butchers' and fishmongers' shops all year round; ruined for decades, it was recovered by the Asociación de Entibadores Palentinos.
Historical milestone
In 1908 the Sociedad Minera San Luis absorbed the workings of the Euskaro-Castellana and became the dominant company of the Guardo basin; its arrival sent the population soaring and turned a farming and stock-raising villa into an industrial enclave.
