What to see and do in Dehesa de Romanos

Dehesa de Romanos
Village
Dehesa de Romanos is a hamlet in Palencia province, in the La Ojeda area, with fewer than forty inhabitants, organised into two quarters, upper and lower, of Hispano-Roman origin unlike the Mozarabic character of other nearby villages; there was a medieval settlement called Miranda. Between the two quarters stands the Romanesque church of Santa Eugenia, from the late 12th century, a single nave with a flat roof, whose pointed triumphal arch rests on capitals carved with the scene of Samson and the lion; it holds an early 17th-century altarpiece with sculptures of Santa Eugenia and San Juan Bautista, and beside it a medieval necropolis with stone sarcophagi was found. In the Barrio de Arriba also stands the baroque church of San Martín, and the festivals are held on 17 July and 11 November.
Church of Santa Eugenia de Dehesa de Romanos
Monument
A late twelfth-century Romanesque church built in masonry and ashlar, with a single nave and capitals carved with Samson tearing apart the lion and pairs of confronted griffins; it coexists with the Baroque church of San Martín.
Sarcophagus necropolis of Dehesa de Romanos
Nature
Beside the church of Santa Eugenia a medieval necropolis with stone sarcophagi was discovered, proof that the small settlement had far more population in the Middle Ages than its forty present-day households.
