What to see and do in Payo de Ojeda

Payo de Ojeda
Village
Payo de Ojeda is a village of about sixty inhabitants at 1,018 metres above sea level, in the valley of la Ojeda, through which flows the stream that rises at the fuente de Don Pedro; in the mid-19th century it had 249 inhabitants and lived off flax, which the women spun and wove, with four flour mills that were not enough to grind the wheat, which had to be imported. Its church, dedicated to Santas Justa y Rufina, patron saints of Seville martyred in the 3rd century, is Gothic in style with Romanesque elements: it holds a font with plant interlace, a small 13th-century Calvary above the doorway and a porch dated 1674. It is reached along a path lined with acacias.
Church of las Santas Justa y Rufina
Monument
The church of Santas Justa y Rufina, in Payo de Ojeda (Palencia), is a church in transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles, with a single nave covered by a barrel vault and a ribbed presbytery. It is dedicated to two Sevillian sisters, potters from a Christian family, martyred around the year 287 for refusing to pay tribute to a pagan feast in honour of Venus and to renounce their beliefs before the prefect Diogeniano, who subjected them to torture on the rack and with iron hooks before leaving them to die in prison. Venerated as saints by both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, in Payo de Ojeda they are celebrated on 19 and 20 July, dates close to their Sevillian feast day of 17 July.

Curiosity
Above the entrance to the church a small Calvary relief from the beginning of the thirteenth century is preserved, and inside a Romanesque baptismal font decorated with plant interlace, with the bowl damaged.
