Villamediana
Village
Villamediana is a village of 177 inhabitants in the district of El Cerrato, in the province of Palencia, with the valley of the Pisuerga river to the south, which serves as its municipal boundary, and limestone plateaus (páramos) to the north; the town rises at 792 metres, in a municipal area whose altitude ranges between 723 metres by the river and 890 on the páramo. It preserves part of its medieval walled layout and the ermita-humilladero of the Esclavina. Madoz recorded 280 houses spread over four quarters. Its church of Santa Columba, with the appearance of a cathedral and a fortress, was begun in the 12th century and completed with work in the 13th, 14th and 16th centuries; it is declared bien de interés cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). Here were born the beatified Francisco de Jesús Terrero Pérez, missionary and martyr in Japan, and the archaeologist Hermilio Alcalde del Río.
