What to see and do in Hornillos de Cerrato

Hornillos de Cerrato
Village
Hornillos de Cerrato is a municipality in the Palencia district of Cerrato, with an area of 35.36 km² and a wind farm next to the town. In 1507 Queen Joanna of Castile, known as Joanna the Mad, spent the night in its castle, today in ruins and known as the Castillo de los Enríquez, during the transfer of the body of her husband Philip the Handsome on the way to Tordesillas. It also preserves the church of San Miguel, from the 13th century and rebuilt in Baroque style in the 17th, and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Belvis. In 2011 the village was proclaimed champion of the "Mi Pueblo es el Mejor" contest. In the mid-19th century it had 291 inhabitants; today it has 171, and it lies at 845 metres above sea level, in a valley surrounded by gypsum hills.
Church of San Miguel de Hornillos
Monument
Built in the thirteenth century and remade in Baroque during the seventeenth, it shares the village with the ruins of the castle of the Enríquez family, on whose hill tradition places a halt of the funeral cortège of Felipe the Handsome.
Gypsum quarries and hermitage of Belvis
Curiosity
On top of the hill gypsum quarries were worked that supplied the surrounding villages, and on the eastern slope stands the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Belvis, which was an Augustinian convent before moving to Palencia.
