Villahán
Village
Villahán is a village in the province of Palencia, in the El Cerrato comarca, with about ninety-five inhabitants at 806 metres of altitude. Its name comes from the union of the Latin villa with the personal name Fanius, from which Villa Fan derived, the name under which it was resettled after being reconquered by Alfonso III the Great; in the 10th century it belonged to the alfoz of Palenzuela, of the county of Castile, and in the 14th it was a hamlet of that jurisdiction, in the hands of Queen Maria of Portugal, mother of Peter I of Castile. In the 16th century it was the lordship of Luis Ossorio and later the subject of a lawsuit between the Duchess of Alba and the Count of Benavente. Its church of San Andrés, rebuilt in 1777, has three stone naves. In the mid-19th century its population came close to 791 inhabitants.
