Herrera de Valdecañas
Village
Herrera de Valdecañas is a village of about 150 inhabitants at 829 metres above sea level, in the district of El Cerrato (Palencia), already mentioned on 1 January 1061 in the fuero of Palenzuela granted by Alfonso VI of Castile; its name refers to an old settlement of blacksmiths (herreros), to which Valdecañas was later added, for the fertile valley of reeds where it lies. Its church of Santa Cecilia, in Gothic style, was declared Bien de Interés Turístico Nacional (a Spanish national tourist-interest designation) and holds a Baroque altarpiece in its central nave, although in 1947 it lost its bell tower and part of a nave in a collapse that was later rebuilt. On the village hillside there open about three hundred 19th-century cellars.
