What to see and do in Villodrigo

Villodrigo
Village
Villodrigo forms a small Palencia enclave entirely surrounded by territory of Burgos, next to the motorway linking Burgos with Portugal and on the banks of the Arlanzón river, of which the ruins of a late Roman bridge survive. Its name derives from a 10th-century nobleman called Rodrigo, lord of the place then known as the villa of Rodrigo. It belonged to the Partido de Castrojeriz, with crown jurisdiction and an ordinary mayor. On 23 October 1812, during the French retreat in the War of Independence, the battle of Villodrigo was fought about four kilometres from the village, in which French lancers defeated the English dragoons in hand-to-hand combat, leaving 250 dead and 85 prisoners. With about ninety-five inhabitants, it now lives off irrigated farming and sheep raising.
