Quintana del Puente
Village
Quintana del Puente is a village of about 250 inhabitants in the district of El Cerrato, in the province of Palencia, situated at 751 metres above sea level, where the Arlanza river descends towards the Pisuerga and a Renaissance bridge spans the watercourse. Its patronal festival is San Esteban, on 3 August, and its parish church, dedicated to the same saint, stands out for its west and south doorways and the capitals inside. In 1942 the Sanatorio Antituberculoso General Varela was built on the mountainside, with three hundred beds, which in 1955 gave way to a children's summer camp for the offspring of military personnel, run by Mercedarian nuns, which boosted the village's economy; today the building is in ruins. It was the birthplace of José Antolín Toledano (1936), who founded, together with his brother, the Grupo Antolin of Burgos.
Bridge of dieciocho arcos sobre el Arlanza
Monument
The eighteen-arched stone bridge that crosses the Arlanza gives the village its name and was for centuries the obligatory crossing between the Cerrato and the Bureba; the river also drove the town's flour mill.
