Tabanera de Cerrato
Village
Tabanera de Cerrato is a village in the district of El Cerrato, in the province of Palencia, at 798 metres above sea level and with about 135 inhabitants. The area was reconquered and resettled in the second half of the 9th century by Asturians, Castilians, highlanders, Franks, Galicians and Basques, and by 1074 Tabanera already appears mentioned as one of the hamlets of Palenzuela. It was a seigneury of the Avellaneda, Manrique and Enríquez families, and in the mid-19th century it had 364 inhabitants, far more than today. It traditionally lived off beekeeping, which brought fame to the honey of the Cerrato and was recorded in the saying "ajos de Curiel, quesos de Peñafiel y de Cerrato la miel" (garlic from Curiel, cheese from Peñafiel, and honey from the Cerrato), alongside the farming and livestock raising that support its economy today. It preserves the church of San Esteban as its main monument.
