Peral de Arlanza
Village
Peral de Arlanza is a town of 169 inhabitants in the Arlanza comarca, province of Burgos, whose name may come from a Roman bridge over the Arlanza river, rebuilt during the Renaissance and widened in the early 20th century. It was intensively repopulated by Mozarabs and inhabitants of the Kingdom of León in the early decades of the 10th century, and is first mentioned, as Perale, in 1048, in the Cartulary of the Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza, to which King Ferdinand I donated the place; the monastery's church is declared a national monument. It traditionally lived from livestock farming and once had a tower house, demolished during the reign of Henry II, from which the river and the approach to Palenzuela were watched. The painter Andrés García Prieto was born in the town.
