What to see and do in Antigüedad

Antigüedad
Village
Antigüedad is a town in the El Cerrato comarca, in the province of Palencia, at 770 metres of altitude, with 329 inhabitants (INE 2025). It is recorded as Antiquitat on 27 April 1054, when Countess Muniadonna donated it, together with thirteen other villages, to the monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza. By royal decree of 1 October 1547 it obtained full civil and criminal jurisdiction, high and low, as a town independent of Palencia. It preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, rebuilt in the 17th century in Baroque style, and the Cruz de la Muñeca, linked to the passage of Joanna the Mad in 1507. It venerates the Virgen de Garón, the local patroness, in a hermitage five kilometres from the village, with pilgrimages the last weekend of May and the last of September.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Antigüedad
Monument
Rebuilt in the seventeenth century in Baroque style, it presides over a town documented since 1054 under the name of Antiquitat and which received its own jurisdiction in 1547, in the middle of the reign of Carlos I.
Spring and riverside grove of the Virgen de Garón
Nature
Five kilometres from the village, the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Garón is surrounded by a spring and a stand of trees that form one of the most unusual wet spots in a Cerrato dominated by dry moorland.
The F-4 Phantom fighter jet of Antigüedad
Curiosity
Beside the Cruz de la Muñeca, in this village of three hundred households a decommissioned F-4 Phantom II fighter has been installed, an unexpected monument with which the town honours its aviation pioneers.
