Fair of el Camino Olvidado Activity · Guardo, Alto Carrión, Palencia Image of Guardo, not of the place itself. On the third weekend of August Guardo holds a fair dedicated to the Camino Olvidado, a Way of St James route that between the 9th and 13th centuries helped pilgrims avoid the Muslim aceifa raids harassing the southern routes; as the Reconquista advanced it lost pilgrims to the Camino Francés until it fell into oblivion. Today it is signposted and prepared for walking, cycling or riding, through a landscape crossed by hardly any walkers. The Guardo fair, comarca capital of the Alto Carrión, champions this Jacobean mountain route together with the mining memory of a comarca lying at the western edge of Palencia, between the foothills of the Cantabrian mountain range and the Castilian-León plateau.
