Monument to the Miner of Guardo Monument · Guardo, Alto Carrión, Palencia A four-metre bronze erected in 1975 by the sculptor Jacinto Higueras Cátedra, with scenes of work down the pit; it is the most emblematic piece of a town that lived off coal for more than a century. The group, commissioned by the town council in the early 1970s from the architect Antonio Espinosa, was cast at Ángel Lorca's workshops from a 1974 sketch, and is completed by a pond and stone reliefs with mining scenes designed by Higueras Cátedra himself. It was inaugurated on 14 July 1975 at a ceremony presided over by the Minister of Labour, Fernando Suárez González. Every 4 December it hosts the feast of Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners, with a mass and procession that ends before the monument with a floral offering and the singing of "Santa Bárbara bendita".
