Valdefresno
Village
Valdefresno is a municipality of about 2,360 inhabitants made up of twenty villages, in the district of La Sobarriba, ten kilometers from the city of León. Its name comes from the Latin supra ripa, “above the rivers,” referring to its location on the plateau that separates the valleys of the Torío and the Porma. It belonged to the old Hermandad de La Sobarriba, an association of villages formed to defend rural settlements against the urban chapters. Pilgrims on the French Way pass through its territory every day on their way to the city of León. Its municipal coat of arms depicts an ash tree over a pilgrim's shell and twenty links symbolizing the twenty villages of the municipality.
