What to see and do in Mansilla Mayor

Mansilla Mayor
Village
Mansilla Mayor is a León municipality of about 315 inhabitants, on the alluvial plain formed by the Porma river to the west and the Esla to the south, where the former flows into the latter; its name comes from the diminutive of mansum, "dwelling" or stopping-place on a Roman road around which the town grew up. It also includes the localities of Nogales, Villamoros de Mansilla and Villaverde de Sandoval. Its church of San Miguel, with a single nave with two side aisles added in the modern era, is covered by two coffered ceilings separated by a triumphal arch: a Mudéjar one over the nave and a Baroque one, carved in walnut in 1709 by the León master craftsmen Francisco Sánchez and Valentín Díez Portilla, over the chancel. The remodelling of its Plaza Mayor won the 2020 FAD award.
Monastery of Santa María de Sandoval
Monument
The monastery of Santa María de Sandoval, in Villaverde de Sandoval, within the municipality of Mansilla Mayor, is a former 12th-century Cistercian abbey now in a state of partial ruin. Its vaults, pillars and capitals in the chancel and first bay are Romanesque of Cistercian affiliation, while the rest of the building belongs to the late Gothic period; it was declared a historic-artistic monument on 3 June 1931. The church still functions as a parish and still hosts liturgical services on rare occasions. In 2015, when Unesco's designation of the Way of St James in Spain was expanded, the monastery was included, under number 1464, in the retrospective inventory of elements associated with that route.
