What to see and do in San Andrés del Rabanedo

San Andrés del Rabanedo
Village
San Andrés del Rabanedo is a municipality in the Bernesga valley, in the district of Tierra de León, comprising the localities of San Andrés del Rabanedo, Trobajo del Camino, Villabalter, Ferral del Bernesga and the Pinilla quarter, which since the 1980s has become the great residential expansion of the León capital. Its territory, of 6,500 hectares, is divided between the floodable vega, where the Pinilla, Paraíso-Cantinas and La Sal quarters sit, a second terrace where the population centers are located, and the hills, largely occupied by the Conde de Gazola Military Base. The vegetation ranges from Pyrenean oak and holm oak in the higher areas to thyme, rockrose and heather in the deforested moorlands. It has about 29,900 inhabitants, and part of León airport lies within its territory.

Nature
The settlements of the municipality are laid out over the Bernesga valley as a residential ring and expansion space for the provincial capital, preserving along the riverbank poplar groves and huerta plots that were the traditional livelihood.
Trobajo and the landowner Jacob Trepalio
Curiosity
The place name of Trobajo del Camino, documented as Trebalio, Trepalio and Troballo, derives according to Justiniano Rodríguez from the name of a Jewish landowner who at the end of the tenth century gave the town its name.
Brotherhood of the Bernesga de Yuso
Historical milestone
The councils of the municipality constituted themselves as a brotherhood and in 1558 jointly opposed a tax that León wanted to levy on them; in 1563 they joined together again to defend Ferral from a lordship bought through underhand dealings.
