What to see and do in Mansilla de las Mulas

Mansilla de las Mulas
Village
Mansilla de las Mulas is a town in the province of León, with about 1,700 inhabitants, situated in the Valle de Mansilla, beside the Esla river, 21 kilometres from the León provincial capital. It was successively known as Mansiella del Ponte, after its bridge over the Esla, Mansilla del Camino, for being a stop on the French Way of St James, and finally Mansilla de las Mulas, a name it took from its important fairs for horse-family livestock: horses, mares, donkeys and mules. Its walled enclosure, with six semicircular towers, has been a historic-artistic ensemble since 1931. The Museum of the Leonese Villages was set up in the former convent of San Agustín.
Medieval bridge over the Esla at Mansilla
Monument
A work of eight barrel vaults and one hundred and forty-one metres in length, raised in the 12th century and rebuilt in 1573. Its fabric adds up to eight centuries of repairs and it is the obligatory crossing for pilgrims leaving the town for León.
Medieval Days of Mansilla de las Mulas
Activity
Held around 25 July, they bring together a craft market on the Plaza del Grano and knightly jousting beside the wall, at the postern gate. At night witch trials and burnings are re-enacted, and they close with medieval concerts.
