What to see and do in Algadefe

Algadefe
Village
Algadefe lies in the south of León, on the boundary between the León páramo and the vega of the Esla, a river that runs through it from north to south and that a canal draws on for irrigation. Its name comes from the Arabic al-Qaḏḏāf, 'the banks', a legacy of the pocket of Mozarabic population that formed in this area of southern León after the Reconquista, when it kept its Muslim name amid a surrounding of Gothic place names. Earlier, on the Teso de la Mora, one of the hills overlooking the vega, there was a Celtic hillfort-type settlement, over traces of human occupation going back to the Chalcolithic. By the year 904 a pre-Benedictine monastery dedicated to San Martín already existed on the site. With about 310 inhabitants, the municipality celebrates San Antonio Abad on 17 January.
