What to see and do in Gordoncillo

Gordoncillo
Village
Gordoncillo is a town of about 310 inhabitants at 747 metres altitude, beside the Cea river, in the León district of Esla-Campos. Of medieval origin as a resettlement town documented in the early 11th century, it preserves that past in its urban layout, clustered around the Plaza Mayor. Its church of San Juan Degollado, with a Herrerian portal of 1597 and a neo-Mudéjar tower of 1906, and its former flour mill, now an industrial museum, coexist with an economy still resting on cereal and vine: after phylloxera, which almost wiped out the vineyards in the early 20th century, these were revived in the 1990s under the Tierra de León designation of origin, with the Gordonzello winery, founded in 1996 by 101 winegrowers, as the only local producer.
Church of San Juan Degollado de Gordoncillo
Monument
A church built after the fire that destroyed the previous one in 1467. It preserves the Flemish Gothic chapel of Los Mártires, a Herrerian doorway designed in 1597 by Baltasar Gutiérrez and a neo-Mudéjar tower of five stages raised in 1906.
Marina Luz flour mill
Curiosity
A flour mill opened in 1936 and rebuilt after the fire of 6 March 1944 with machinery from the Swiss firm Bühler; it milled wheat until 1965. Turned into a museum in 2014, it still has the rammed earth and adobe granary raised opposite it.
