What to see and do in Calzada del Coto

Calzada del Coto
Village
Calzada del Coto is a municipality of León made up of Calzada del Coto and Codornillos, with about 215 inhabitants, where the Camino Francés crosses the old Roman Via Trajana, made of cobblestones and about four metres wide. Its origin goes back to the early medieval repopulations: Alfonso III of Asturias granted the place to the monastery of Sahagún at the beginning of the 10th century, and it depended on the monastery until the 19th-century disentailments. It lives off dry and irrigated farming — including the lentil of Tierra de Campos, with PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status since 2006 — and livestock farming. It preserves the medieval churches of San Esteban and San Pelayo and the hermitage of San Roque; in August it celebrates the Carro de la Hoguera, with that year's quintos as the main participants.
Church of San Esteban de Calzada del Coto
Monument
A church of the late fourteenth century raised in brick and rammed earth, with a square-plan tower of decreasing width finished with a hipped roof; it holds medieval wooden carvings and an eighteenth-century Baroque altarpiece.
Hermitage of San Roque de Calzada del Coto
Monument
Built in brick in 1885 to replace a fifteenth-century hermitage, it is dedicated to the town's patron and remains the setting for a good part of the village's traditional celebrations.
The fork in the Way at Calzada del Coto
Activity
Here the pilgrim chooses between two itineraries: the Roman road towards Calzadilla de los Hermanillos or the Real Camino Francés towards Bercianos, one of the few waymarked historic forks on the whole route.
The Via Trajana and the oak wood of Valdelocajos
Nature
The old Roman road that gives the municipality its name crosses the old oak wood of Valdelocajos, a patch of woodland surviving among cereal fields and through which one of the variants of the Camino now runs.
The Bonfire Cart
Curiosity
Every 15 August the young people turning eighteen gather firewood in the common woodlands, load it onto a cart and parade it through the village; the rite commemorates the liberation from monastic lordship in the nineteenth century.
