Sancedo
Village
Sancedo is a municipality of about 530 inhabitants at 673 metres above sea level, in the Leonese comarca of El Bierzo, made up of Sancedo, Ocero and Cueto; it is one of the province's bilingual municipalities, with the traditional speech of the Leonese-language area. Its original name was Salcedo, already documented in 1336, referring to the willow, and the reasons for the change of consonants since the 16th century are unknown. Founded in the Middle Ages within the Kingdom of León, the three villages depended throughout the Ancien Régime on the monastery of San Andrés de Espinareda. Ocero's parish church, of Romanesque origin, holds a 16th-century image of Saint Anne, while Sancedo's houses one of Saint Anthony. On 28 January, Saint Thyrsus is honoured there.
