Fabero
Village
Fabero is a mining town in the province of León, in the Bierzo, with almost 4,000 inhabitants, one of the bilingual localities where Leonese is spoken. Situated in the valley of the Cúa river, it borders the Valle de Ancares, where its settlement of Fontoria, within the reserve, preserves pallozas and the habitat of the capercaillie. Its origins lie between the 10th and 11th centuries, and in 1020 it came under the dependency, for eight centuries, of the monastery of San Andrés de Espinareda; later it became the head of a municipality comprising the towns of Fontoria, Bárcena, Lillo, Otero de Naraguantes and San Pedro de Paradela. With the industrial revolution it experienced its greatest boom thanks to anthracite, which took it from 376 residents in 1920 to 8,140 in 1960. It preserves the Gran Corta and honours Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners, every 4 December.
