Berlanga del Bierzo
Village
Berlanga del Bierzo is a municipality of about 310 inhabitants in the province of León, in the comarca of El Bierzo, situated at 805 metres of altitude. Its name comes from the Astur berg, citadel, and lágara, elevated area, and its first documentary mention dates from the year 918, in a founding charter kept at the abbey of San Andrés de Espinareda. Until the 1916 reform the municipality was simply called Berlanga. In 1790 the soldier Francisco Pérez Mercadillo was born in the town, and he fought in the Peninsular War and the Carlist Wars. His life changed in 1917 with the opening of the mines called Julias; the church of San Juan Bautista presides over the village and the festivals are celebrated on 24 and 29 June.
