What to see and do in Toreno

Toreno
Village
Toreno is a mining town of El Bierzo, in the province of León, set in the valley of the río Sil, which divides it between the main settlement, on the right bank, and the district of Torenillo, on the left. It has about 2,800 inhabitants and is one of the Bierzo municipalities where Leonese is still spoken. It preserves the remains of a Celtic castro and of the 17th-century palace of the counts of Toreno, as well as a medieval pillory. The earliest traces of human presence date back to the Bronze Age, with cave paintings at Librán and San Pedro Mallo, and to Astur-period castros at Librán, Tombrio de Arriba, Toreno and Villar de las Traviesas; the Romans built a bridge over the Sil. The railway from Ponferrada to Villablino, opened in 1919, gave a decisive boost to its coal production.
Botillo del Bierzo
