What to see and do in Cabañas Raras

Cabañas Raras
Village
Cabañas Raras is a locality in the province of León, in the comarca of El Bierzo, with about 1,280 inhabitants at 557 metres of altitude, one of the few in Bierzo where the Leonese language is preserved. Its name recalls the village's scattered origin, formed by shepherds' huts, and the old toll charged on a medieval bridge, owned by a certain Don Fernando; from that dispersal several of its neighbourhoods still remain, such as those of Arriba, Abajo and Santa Ana. In the late Middle Ages it was part of the Señorío de Arganza and, from the 15th century, of the Marquis of Villafranca, from whom the village freed itself on 5 May 1860 by paying 120,000 reales. On 26 July it celebrates Santa Ana with the chorizada, a sharing out of sandwiches and local wine.

Food and drink
Grey and white reinette apples grown in the Bierzo basin, with rough skin and tart flesh, covered by a designation of origin. They are the basis of local compotes and desserts, alongside the conference pear and the chestnut of the neighbouring groves.
