What to see and do in Camponaraya

Camponaraya
Village
Camponaraya is a municipality in the comarca of El Bierzo, in the province of León, with about 4,000 inhabitants. It was born in the Middle Ages from the Asturian-Leonese repopulation, when Campo and Naraya were founded, linked first to the monastery of San Julián de Samos and later to that of Santa María de Carracedo; its position beside the Camino de Santiago brought it pilgrims and two hospitals, that of la Soledad and that of San Juan de Jabero. Campo and Naraya, separated by the Naraya stream, were not legally united into a single locality until the 15th century, giving rise to the name Camponaraya. It is one of the municipalities of León where Galician is spoken, a linguistic transition with Leonese. Its wine, protected by the Bierzo designation of origin, is exported to countries such as Germany and the United States.
