What to see and do in Cubillos del Sil

Cubillos del Sil
Village
Cubillos del Sil is a town in the province of León, in the El Bierzo comarca, one of the municipalities where the Leonese language is preserved, situated beside the Bárcena reservoir, on the Sil river, at 580 metres above sea level, with about 1,750 inhabitants. Its territory preserves pre-Roman Asturian hillforts at Fresnedo, Finolledo and Posadina, and it was crossed by the Roman road Vía Nova, built in the 1st century to link Braga with Astorga. Its name comes from a Leonese diminutive of the Latin cupa, applied to land with some feature shaped like a hollow. In 1370 the local lord Gonzalo Berciano de Cubillos received these lands in commendam. Its church of San Cristóbal preserves a 17th-century Baroque main altarpiece, the work of Manuel Gil and Francisco Corral.
Milestone of Nero of Cubillos
Curiosity
The mansion where Severo Gómez Núñez, artillery general and promoter of the Bierzo irrigation schemes, was born holds inside it a Roman milestone from the time of Nero found at Almázcara, a witness to the roads that served the gold mines.
