What to see and do in Carracedelo

Carracedelo
Village
Carracedelo is a municipality of about 3,400 inhabitants in the province of León, in the comarca of El Bierzo, situated right in the Bercian tectonic basin between the Sil and Cúa rivers, in a flat area of orchards and market gardens. It is one of the municipalities of León where Galician is spoken. The first traces of settlement go back to pre-Roman times, with the Astur hillfort of El Castrelín, and to Roman times, from which inscriptions found in Carracedelo and Villadepalos remain. The founding of its localities, except for Posada, took place in the Middle Ages; the first documentary mention of Carracedo dates from the year 957. Its great monument is the monastery of Santa María de Carracedo, founded around the year 990 by Bermudo II of León.
Monastery of Santa María de Carracedo
Monument
The monastery of Santa María de Carracedo is a former abbey, founded in the 10th century as a Benedictine and later Cistercian community, located in Carracedo del Monasterio, in the municipality of Carracedelo, El Bierzo, near the stretch of the Way of St James between Ponferrada and Villafranca del Bierzo. The complex, which brings together the monastic buildings and a former royal palace, mixes Romanesque, Cistercian and proto-Gothic elements from the 12th and 13th centuries; it was declared a monument on 9 November 1929 and today survives half in ruins, though restored for visits. It now houses the Museum of the Cistercian Order and Monasticism of El Bierzo, run by the Leonese Institute of Culture.
