What to see and do in Cacabelos

Cacabelos
Village
Cacabelos is a Bercian town situated on the Camino Francés, on the lower course of the río Cúa, between 478 and 700 metres of altitude; its cherry trees, together with the vine, characterise the landscape of the municipality, the wine capital of the DO Bierzo. At its edge rises Castro Ventosa, an Iron Age hillfort settlement identified with the pre-Roman Bergida mentioned by Florus and Orosius, taken by the Romans between 25 and 19 BC after the wars against the Astures. The sanctuary of las Angustias holds its oldest devotion. It has about 4,734 inhabitants.
Wines of the Bierzo Designation of Origin
Food and drink
Reds made from mencía grapes on slate soils and steeply pitched slopes, covered by a designation of origin of their own. Cacabelos, crossed by the Camino Francés, is one of the historic centres of this vineyard.
