Toral de los Vados
Village
Toral de los Vados is a town of about 1,750 inhabitants in the comarca of El Bierzo (León), at the point where the rivers Burbia and Cúa meet before joining the Sil; it is one of the Leonese municipalities where Galician is spoken, although the historical toponymy retains abundant Leonesisms suggesting an initial predominance of Leonese. It was called Villadecanes until 3 May 2010. Its territory shows human presence since pre-Roman times, with the Astur castro of the pico Ferreiro, near Paradela del Río, and it preserves several Roman inscriptions. The settlements that make up the municipality were founded in the Middle Ages, during the resettlement processes of the Leonese monarchy. Its modern character was shaped by the cement factory built in 1920, next to the railway junction.
