What to see and do in Corullón

Corullón
Village
Corullón is a municipality in the El Bierzo comarca, province of León, one of the few in the province where Galician is spoken; it has 789 inhabitants (INE 2025) and stands at 522 metres, perched above the valley of the Burbia river and surrounded by vineyards of the Bierzo designation of origin. To the west the territory climbs towards the Bierzo mountains, the border with Galicia. There are Asturian hillforts such as that of San Sadurnín, and in the Middle Ages the monastery of Santa Marina de Valverde was founded here, built in the 10th century by Bermudo II for monks fleeing Almanzor. In 1229 Alfonso IX of León founded the monastery of Villabuena and granted it possessions in Corullón. Its Romanesque church of San Esteban, from the late 11th century and of marked Compostelan influence, is declared a Monumento Nacional (National Monument, a historic heritage protection designation).
Church of San Esteban de Corullón
Monument
Built in 1086, demolished seven years later and rebuilt to completion in the year 1100, the church of San Esteban is a Romanesque temple of the late 11th century, with a single nave, built of slate and tufa among vineyard slopes, with strong Compostelan influence visible in its doorway, with a round arch and two archivolts related to the Platerías façade of Santiago Cathedral. It preserves 36 corbels carved in granite with obscene figures, lion and horse heads, monks and fantastical beings with a moralising intent, and a 17th-century chancel that replaced the original semicircular apse, with a Baroque high altarpiece dedicated to San Esteban. It was declared Monumento Nacional (a former top Spanish heritage designation, now Bien de Interés Cultural) on 3 June 1931, the same day as the neighbouring 12th-century church of San Miguel.
Mining settlement of Peña del Seo
Curiosity
The Peña del Seo mining village, also called the village of la Piela, is an abandoned mining hamlet at the foot of Peña del Seo, in the hamlet of Cadafresnas, in Corullón. It arose around the discovery of wolfram ore around 1940, a mineral prized for heavy weaponry that sparked a passing fever in these valleys; after an initial phase of covert gathering during the Second World War, the mining boom surged with the Korean War. The village was built between 1952 and 1953, with 41 dwellings of about 60 square metres fitted with heating, hot water and electric light, comforts far superior to those of other similar mining villages. The mines closed in 1958. It is included on the Red List of Heritage at Risk of Hispania Nostra.
