Monastery of Santa María de Carracedo Monument · Carracedelo, El Bierzo, León The monastery of Santa María de Carracedo is a former abbey, founded in the 10th century as a Benedictine and later Cistercian community, located in Carracedo del Monasterio, in the municipality of Carracedelo, El Bierzo, near the stretch of the Way of St James between Ponferrada and Villafranca del Bierzo. The complex, which brings together the monastic buildings and a former royal palace, mixes Romanesque, Cistercian and proto-Gothic elements from the 12th and 13th centuries; it was declared a monument on 9 November 1929 and today survives half in ruins, though restored for visits. It now houses the Museum of the Cistercian Order and Monasticism of El Bierzo, run by the Leonese Institute of Culture.
