What to see and do in Carucedo

Carucedo
Village
Carucedo is a municipality of about 480 inhabitants in León's El Bierzo, where Galician is spoken with features of its own from Leonese, and which groups together the villages of La Barosa, Campañana, El Carril, Carucedo, Lago de Carucedo, Las Médulas and Villarrando. It holds Las Médulas, the largest open-cast gold mine of the Roman Empire and a World Heritage Site since 1997, and the lake of Carucedo, formed by the debris washed down by that mining operation together with the remains of the channels that carried water to the mine. Its founding as a settlement goes back to the Middle Ages, within the kingdom of León; the first written documentation dates from 1213, in the fuero granted to it by Alfonso IX.
Las Médulas
Monument
The largest open-cast gold working of the Roman Empire, excavated by the ruina montium technique between the 1st and 3rd centuries. Its reddish clay pinnacles and its galleries were inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage list in 1997.
Lake Carucedo
Nature
A barrier lake born of the alluvium of waste that the Roman mining of Las Médulas washed down the valley, a singular case of a wetland created by human hand. Ringed by poplar groves and reed beds, it is today a refuge for waterbirds.
