What to see and do in Borrenes

Borrenes
Village
Borrenes is a municipality of about 300 inhabitants in the comarca of El Bierzo, in the province of León, neighbouring Las Médulas, the largest open-cast gold mine of the Roman Empire. Its territory preserves Astur hillforts, such as that of Borrenes, with an imposing wall abandoned after the arrival of the Romans, and the Roman metalworking settlement of Orellán, alongside channels that carried water to the mine. It is one of the municipalities of León where Galician is spoken, with features of its own from Leonese. The church of San Vicente holds a Romanesque carving of the Virgen de la Vega, from medieval times. The municipality honours San Vicente, its patron, in January, and its different settlements also celebrate their own festivals, such as that of Orellán for San Pedro on 29 June.

A balcony looking out over the reddish pinnacles of Las Médulas, reached by walking through the galleries the Romans dug to drain the mountain. It is the point from which the scale of the gold working can best be taken in.
