What to see and do in Páramo del Sil

Páramo del Sil
Village
Páramo del Sil stretches along the banks of the río Sil, in the northernmost part of León's El Bierzo, surrounded by mountains over 2,000 metres high, such as the Catoute or the Miro, beneath whose north face lies hidden the glacial lake of Cheiroso; this rim slows Atlantic influence and gives the valley its own microclimate. It is one of the municipalities of León that preserve the Leonese language. The first settlers left the Astur hillforts of Las Torcas, the Teso del Castro and the Leoneza, inhabited from the 3rd century BC. In its forests part of the small Cantabrian brown bear population survives, along with wolves and chamois. With about 1,140 inhabitants, on 5 January 1809 the Junta Suprema de León installed its headquarters here, and in November the magosto is celebrated with chestnuts.
Lake Cheiroso
Nature
A small lake of glacial origin hidden on the northern slope of the peak of El Miro, 1,990 metres high, within the mountain rim that separates the Sil valley from Asturias and holds back the Atlantic influence over the Bierzo basin.
Bee shelters of the Sil valley
Curiosity
Circular stone enclosures, facing south and topped with great overhanging slabs, built to hold beehives and stop bears from destroying them. They dot the hills alongside the cabanos that sheltered the shepherds.
