Contreras
Village
Contreras is a hamlet in the province of Burgos, in the La Demanda district, 56 kilometres from Burgos on the road to Soria, whose territory lies within the Sabinares del Arlanza Special Protection Area, a refuge for griffon vulture and Egyptian vulture. The village is dominated by the San Carlos peak, a former Arab fortress at 1,465 metres; in 1866 the Itinerario descriptivo militar de España attributed it 153 residents. In its Mirandilla valley, the Sad Hill cemetery was built for the filming of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, restored years later by a group of volunteers. It also preserves traditional livestock shelters, studied by the University of Burgos, and celebrates its festivities on 15 and 16 August in honour of Our Lady and San Roque, with processions between the church and the hermitage of San Andrés. It now has 81 inhabitants.
