Monasterio de la Sierra
Village
Monasterio de la Sierra is a hamlet of 38 inhabitants in the Sierra de la Demanda, province of Burgos, set on the southwestern slope of the sierra de Neila, at 1,161 meters of altitude and 70 km from the provincial capital. Its name recalls the Franciscan convent of Santa María de Alveinte, active from the 15th century until the Mendizábal disentailment. The Valladares river, a tributary of the Arlanza, passes by the village with an old dam and a mill. In the municipal area stand out the Garganta de las Calderas, a 1.5 km gorge cut into siliceous rock, and the site of El Castillejo, known as the Ciudad Encantada for its rock formations. The church of San Pedro covers the chancel with an octopartite rib vault.
