Villalba de Duero
Village
Villalba de Duero is a municipality of 720 inhabitants in the comarca of La Ribera (Burgos), on the right bank of the Duero, downstream from Aranda. It obtained the title of villa on 12 January 1639, during the reign of Philip IV, thereby becoming independent of the jurisdiction of Aranda, although it remained under the lordship of the Count of Castrillo. Very close by lies the Carrascal wetland, lagoons formed over old gravel pits, now naturalised and turned into a site for bird migration and breeding. Its economy revolves around the vine, covered by the Ribera del Duero and Lechazo de Castilla y León designations of origin. The church of San Miguel, Renaissance in style with a plateresque façade, is reached by a stone stairway and holds three Baroque altars.
