Castrillo de la Vega
Village
Castrillo de la Vega is a municipality in the Ribera del Duero comarca, in the province of Burgos, set at 805 metres of altitude on a plain bordered to the north by the Duero river and also watered by the Valpedrizo and Guma streams. It entered history in the year 912, after the conquest of neighbouring Aza by count Gonzalo Fernández, ancestor of Fernán González, as part of the defensive line protecting the Christian colonisation of the right bank of the Duero; the epithet de la Vega recalls the farming vocation that was later added to its military one. It belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Aza. With 626 inhabitants and surrounded by vineyards of the Ribera del Duero denomination of origin, it preserves the Torre del Monte, a former castle, and the ruins of the San Roque bridge.
