Haza
Village
Haza, called Aza until 1962, is a municipality of 33 inhabitants in the Ribera del Duero, Burgos, on the southern slope closing off the Duero valley, in a position dominated by the Buitrera peak and defended to the west by the Riaza river. It was a town of the former Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Aza, a lordship governed until the 19th century by a mayor appointed by the count of Miranda; in 1182 the women's monastery of Santa María was founded here, dependent on the Cistercian abbey of Bujedo de Juarros and under the protection of Alfonso VIII. By the mid-19th century, according to Madoz, it had 34 houses. It preserves a 15th-century walled enclosure, built by the counts of Miranda and declared a historic site, and the church of San Miguel, integrated into the wall, with 15th-century Hispano-Flemish panels.
