Fuentecén
Village
Fuentecén is a Burgos municipality of 246 inhabitants, in the Ribera del Duero comarca, whose origins go back to the 10th century, during the resettlement of the Duero valley after the Reconquista. It depended on the nearby municipality of Haza until 1833, when Ferdinand VII abolished the jurisdictional lordships, and until then formed part of the former Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Aza. The guerrilla fighter Juan Martín Díez, El Empecinado, lived in Fuentecén, and by the mid-19th century the village had grown to 682 inhabitants. Its parish church, rebuilt in 1962 to the plans of a monk from Valbuena de Duero, holds an altarpiece of Santa Catalina dated 1599 and several images attributed to the sculptor Juan de Juni, among them a Cristo Yacente (recumbent Christ) that is carried in procession during Holy Week.
