Cilleruelo de Abajo
Village
Cilleruelo de Abajo is a municipality in the Burgos district of the Arlanza, on the banks of the río Henar, founded in the mid-10th century, during the Reconquista, by a Visigothic foramontano named Fañe Ovéquez, from whom it took its first name, Cilleruelo de Hannovequez. Its inhabitants are known as collalbos because they moved the village up to the col of white limestone rock where the church now stands. It belonged in lordship to the Duke of Medinaceli, and by the mid-19th century it had 196 inhabitants, a figure similar to today's 209. Its church, Gothic with Renaissance elements, uses small squinches in the chancel to move from a square to a pentagonal ground plan. Among its festivities, San Juan and the Procession of the Virgen del Rosario, in October, stand out.
