What to see and do in Bahabón de Esgueva

Bahabón de Esgueva
Village
Bahabón de Esgueva is a municipality in the province of Burgos located in the Esgueva valley, a sub-district of the Ribera del Duero, at an altitude of 923 metres and 60 kilometres from the capital. It was a lordship of the duke of Osuna, who appointed its ordinary mayor, and after the fall of the Ancien Régime it became its own municipality with 195 inhabitants, a population now reduced to 80. It keeps alive the tradition of the marzas, one of its oldest festivities, passed down orally: on the night of 28 February the young men go round the houses of the village singing and collecting food to prepare a communal snack afterwards, a custom linked to the old beginning of the agricultural year and of spring around 1 March.
The Esgueva valley
Nature
The Esgueva rises in this land, on the eastern edge of the region, and opens a narrow valley westward, with a flat bottom and páramo slopes, sown with cereal and lined with poplars along its course; it crosses Bahabón de Esgueva from east to west, with the so-called Monte de Bahabón to the south giving way to the Duero valley. The municipality, at 923 metres above sea level, belongs to the Esgueva valley sub-region, within the Ribera del Duero of Burgos, which also extends into the provinces of Palencia and Valladolid; several villages in this stretch of Burgos province are covered by the Ribera del Duero designation of origin, and the area preserves a distinctive Romanesque style known as the Esgueva School, whose most representative example is the church of Pinillos de Esgueva.
