Hontangas
Village
Hontangas is a municipality of 92 inhabitants in the Ribera del Duero comarca, province of Burgos, beside the Riaza river, whose name derives from Fontangas, "the village of the springs", which indeed abound within its territory. It belonged to the former Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Aza, under manorial jurisdiction whose mayor was appointed by the count of Miranda. It preserves a bridge over the Riaza, old mills and the church of San Juan Bautista. Its ermita of the Virgen de la Cueva arose from a legend: the lords of Haza saw a light coming out of a cave and found there the carved image of the Virgin, which they were unable to remove despite hitching it to an oxcart.
