Hoyales de Roa
Village
Hoyales de Roa is a municipality of the Ribera del Duero, in the province of Burgos, west of Aranda and south of Roa, near the Riaza river, with 208 inhabitants (INE 2025). In 1311 it ceased to depend on Haza by order of Ferdinand IV, and from then on was disputed by various lords: at the end of the 14th century Juan de Avellaneda divided his possessions between his daughter Aldonza and his son Juan, who inherited Hoyales and in 1472 began the village's 15th-century tower, to defend against the count of Miranda, to whom Philip the Handsome would eventually cede the lordship in 1506. Of that fortress three battlemented walls remain, which reached twenty-one metres and can be seen from several kilometres away. Its economy combines dry-farmed cereals, chickpeas and vines with the Riaza vega, where potatoes and sugar beet are grown.
