Berlangas de Roa
Village
Berlangas de Roa is a town in Burgos with 204 inhabitants, in the vega of the Duero, within the Ribera del Duero comarca and the former Aranda district; its name betrays the origin of its resettlers, who came from Santa María de Valeria de Berlangas, on the bank of the Arlanza, during the resettlement push toward the Duero. In 1143 Alfonso VII granted it the charter of Sepúlveda, incorporating it into the newly created Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Roa, and it later belonged, as a manorial town, to the Duke of Siruelo. In the 18th century the bishop of Osma, Bernardo Antonio Calderón, boosted its agriculture, creating an olive grove and mills, now gone. Its church of San Andrés, from the 17th century, holds a 16th-century main altarpiece, a 15th-century tenebrario (Holy Week candelabrum) and a 12th-century Romanesque baptismal font.
