What to see and do in Villadiego

Villadiego
Village
Villadiego is a town in the province of Burgos, in the Odra-Pisuerga district, with 1,453 inhabitants and the most extensive territory in the province, at 327.96 square kilometres, taking in part of three historic districts: Amaya, an old jurisdiction over the Pisuerga; Los Ordejones, a mountainous zone; and Treviño, between the Odra and Brullés rivers. Since 2017 it has been part of the Las Loras Geopark, the first Unesco geopark in Castile and León. It was founded in the 9th century by Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos, lord of Amaya, and between 1785 and 1833 it was the seat of its own judicial district, then a lordship of the duke of Frías. Its medieval old town has been a historic ensemble since 1994, with the arcaded plaza Mayor and the Arco de la Cárcel beside the old Jewish quarter, and every Monday there is a market.
The origin of the expression tomar las de Villadiego
Curiosity
The expression, which means to flee, is connected with the protections that Fernando III granted to the local Jewish quarter: its members wore yellow hose that functioned as a royal safe conduct, and to take them was to put oneself out of danger.
The Prison Arch
Monument
It is the only gate remaining from the medieval enclosure. Built in the fifteenth century with forms already Renaissance, it later served as the town's prison and today houses museum spaces beside the arcaded main square.
The Judas Performance
Activity
Revived in the nineties, this Semana Santa performance brings costumed characters out into the street and stages a theatrical combat. It is the most singular event in the calendar of the comarca's capital.
The black pudding of Villadiego
Food and drink
The town is one of the recognised producing centres of the morcilla of Burgos, with a protected geographical indication since 2018: forty per cent onion, twenty-five rice, lard, blood and spices.
The Monday market
Activity
Every Monday the arcaded square hosts the market that since the Middle Ages has supplied the villages of the Odra and the Brullés. It remains the occasion on which cured meats, cheese, pulses and vegetables of the comarca are bought.
